Stepping out onto the pavement
I feel my feet burn with the day's heat
Compressed into a hotplate of cement.
Desperate to relieve the fire branding etchings into my soles
I bound away toward the softer, kinder, cooler sand bank.
There I soothe the ache, ease the pain, relieve the suffering
That stole my breath and chaffed my toes.
The sand, rich with the balm of the tide
Heals, calms, erases the sting of only moments ago.
Enters the tide with its bath of salts.
Flows over my skin and between my toes
Who screamed in agony and begged for this moment
Only moments ago.
